Download the Trustee Residency Rack Card The O'Neill has been America's premier home to theatrical innovation and exploration each summer for more than four decades, with playwrights and composers from John Guare, Wendy Wasserstein and August Wilson to Lee Blessing, Kia Corthron and Rachel Sheinkin developing new works while in residence at the O'Neill's National Playwrights Conference and National Music Theater Conference. The O'Neill also welcomes theater trustees from around the country to join its community of writers, composers, actors, directors, dramaturgs and staff in a special week-long residency that involves participants in every facet of developing new work for the stage and offers informal sessions with guest speakers on topics of special interest to trustees. Trustees will have access to rehearsals and readings of a half-dozen new plays and musicals, join with the company for all-conference talks about creativity and the theatrical process, meet privately with the O'Neill's Artistic Director and Executive Director, meet with theater professionals from a broad range of commercial and not-for-profit organizations and immerse themselves in all Conference activities. The program gives trustees a fuller understanding of the creation of new work so that they may forge stronger bonds with the artists they support at their home theaters and become better cultural ambassadors for the organizations they represent. Here's what the 2009 schedule looks like. "Three of my trustees have participated in the Residency program, and all have returned to their work actively informed, deeply engaged, and passionately committed to the development of new work for the theater."
- Susan V. Booth, Alliance Theatre Company
"As an artistic director, one can attempt to explain the joys and mysteries of new play development over and over again to one's trustees, but nothing compares to the actual experience of watching a group of artists collaborate on the birth of a new piece of theater. My trustees were thrilled and awed by the process, and delighted by the opportunity to meet so many artists in a relaxed and informal way where they felt included and respected. The O'Neill Trustee Residency is an invaluable and unique growth experience for anyone lucky enough to participate."
- Carey Perloff, American Conservatory Theater
"The opportunity to sit in on design meetings and then have a separate opportunity to talk with the designers later and ask questions about their process was one of the most informative experiences for me. I would highly recommend the experience to any trustee willing to learn more about theater!"
- Paula Butzi, Seattle Repertory Theatre
"Being at the O'Neill last summer made me feel like a theatre insider. There was so much information about the theatre that it was hard to take all of it in. The equality among all the participants to interact, to ask questions, even if they often were naïve, and to observe all parts of the preparation was the highlight of the experience."
- Linda Davidson, Alliance Theatre Company
"One of the things I loved the most was the whole arc of the experience ... watching things, seeing them change and unfold for me and for everyone involved."
- Cheryl Wiesenfeld, Long Wharf Theatre
